Initialize and print 128-bit integers in C
In C, when initializing a 128-bit integer, using a 64-bit value causes the compiler to fail to parse the 128-bit literal, resulting in an error. To solve this, you can define a macro U128 to combine the high and low 64 bits, successfully initializing the 128-bit integer. The final code compiles correctly under both GCC and Clang and outputs the expected result.
Hacking the lehmer64 RNG
Recently, Daniel Lemire discovered that the lehmer64 random number generator is the fastest conventional random number generator, capable of passing the Big Crush test. The internal state of this generator can be reverse-engineered using only three output values, and the relevant code and method have been shared, demonstrating its effectiveness in recovering the state. Compared to the Mersenne Twister, reverse-engineering lehmer64 is simpler, but its theoretical background is more complex.
Why the Wannacry outbreak was so bad
On May 12, 2017, the WannaCry ransomware spread globally, exploiting Microsoft's CVE-2017-0144 vulnerability to infect and encrypt Windows systems. This vulnerability had been patched two months earlier in the MS17-010 update. Because the NSA did not report the vulnerability to Microsoft in a timely manner, reliable exploit code was stolen by the hacker group Shadow Brokers, allowing WannaCry to spread rapidly. This morning, I wrote an article about the probability of invertibility of random matrices over finite fields. For an n × n matrix over a field with q elements, the invertibility probability p(q, n) converges rapidly as n increases, and as n approaches infinity, p(q, ∞) equals the Euler function φ(1/q). Not a security issue
Daniel Stenberg mentioned that Mythos discovered a real vulnerability in curl, and then used an AI-assisted scanner to examine the curl codebase, finding a series of results marked as "real bugs but not security issues." These results include server-triggered NULL dereferences and small memory leaks, which comply with curl's vulnerability disclosure policy. The scanner was able to automatically filter out content that does not need attention based on policy before finding issues, thereby reducing noise levels.
