The case of the hang when the user changed keyboard layouts

A client reported that their program stutters when users change the keyboard layout. After debugging, it was found that the application's foreground window received a WM_ message and did not return after calling DefWindowProc. Since the default behavior of the WM_ message is to change the input language, the system applies this change to all threads of the process, so all UI threads must process the message to receive notifications of keyboard state changes. The client's background thread created a window but did not process messages, causing the language change to remain incomplete and blocking the main UI thread. The client was advised to fix the root issue by either processing messages or destroying the window to avoid future problems.
