Formally proving a calculation with Claude and Lean
Today I conducted an experiment to test whether Claude could generate Lean code to prove a calculation involving six lines of calculus. Initially, Claude produced a proof, but it failed to compile; after eight iterations, it finally succeeded. The proof contained four "sorry" markers, each corresponding to a standard analysis lemma that has an exact reference in Mathlib. The final proof shows that the n-th Fourier sine coefficient is related to the Bessel function as aₙ = (2/n) · Jₙ(n·e).
