Recently I wrote an article exploring whether additional data always reduces posterior variance, and the answer is no. For different Bayesian models, the posterior mean is a weighted average of the prior mean and the new data mean, with weights determined by precision. Taking the Poisson-Gamma model as an example, after observing k events, the posterior variance is (α0 + k) / (β0 + t)², indicating that the posterior variance increases each time an event is observed, and decreases quadratically between observations.

Bayesian data models provide a quantitative and objective framework for updating beliefs, where the posterior mean is a weighted average of the prior mean and the new data mean, with weights determined by precision. Through examples of the normal-normal model, beta-binomial model, and gamma-Poisson model, it can be seen that precision has different meanings in different models, but they all belong to the conjugate models of the 'exponential family' distribution.

A dock that finally wakes up reliably

For a long time, my biggest hardware headache was being unable to wake a docked laptop. Although Thunderbolt 4, announced in 2020, claimed to solve this issue, my CalDigit TS4 purchased in 2022 still occasionally failed to wake the system.
